Adult white-rumped sandpiper at Plum Island, Massachusetts,8th August, 2006.This bird shows a mix of dark, worn breeding plumage feathers and fresh grey winter plumage feathers on its mantle and scapulars. The wing coverts and tertials are highly abraded from wear.

Bright rufous on upper scapulars certainly indicate a juvenile bird, but note the heavy wear on the wing coverts and the tinge of chestnut on the ear coverts. Could this be an adult that has partially moulted out of alternate plumage? By its long bill, this bird is probably a female. See the next few images for detail.
